Over the years, I have trained a lot of mules for myself and others. And it was through training mules for others that I got a lot of mules that had some real bad problems many of which were man made. So this book is to tell you the best method I have found to correct these bad habits and at the same time try to gain the mules respect and confidence. First of all, let me say, though some of these methods may seem a little harsh to you at first, such as tying one down, they actually aren’t because all you are doing is restraining them and mainly showing them that even though they are much stronger, you can still handle them and once they figure this out and that you are in control they will start cooperating and stop trying to apply their bag of tricks on you. Now the mules that have never developed these bad habits I try to go easy with and train without the more restraining methods. But even some of the nicest ones somewhere along the line may need to be corrected on some bad habit they have come up with. I have seen some very well trained mules that at some point or other would pull a stunt that showed he could have used a little more disciplinary action at some point in his training to avoid the circumstance that came up. One such incident that stands out in my mind occured at a national show I was judging at the time. There was a very nice horse mule a young man was riding that had performed well in several classes and was really taking my eye. The barrel race was in progress and here he comes and turns the first barrel nicely and when he takes the second barrel, instead of heading for the third, he headed for the gate and the man couldn’t stop him and this young man was a pretty good hand. And I would say that wasn’t the first time he had pulled this trick. If this mule had been trained in a manner that he always understood who was in command, he would not have done this. (…)
