The mule is of fundamental importance to Missouri’s history and has a widely recognized special status in the state. From the early 19th century through the early 20th century, mules played a central role in the history of Missouri agriculture and land development. In 1870, Missouri was the largest mule state in the nation. This would remain the case until 1900.
