The Borax Museum, the oldest structure in Death Valley, was built around 1883 by F.M. „Borax“ Smith near Monte Blanco to serve as an office, bunkhouse, laboratory and ore checking station. In 1954 the Borax Company, concerned about the preservation of this historic building, moved it to the present site to serve as a museum. George Ishmael of Ash Meadows relocated the Borax Museum building and many of the outdoor exhibits located on the museum grounds. The Borax Company assembled the museum artifacts under the leadership of Harry P. Gower who contributed his extensive mineral collection, some personal photographs and many artifacts, as well.
