Much has been written about the driving of horses and ponies, but their long-eared cousins have been sadly neglected and this book will fill a much-needed gap. The authors, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ellis and Miss Joy Claxton, with their knowledge and practical experience of the subject, have covered all aspects of donkey driving -from buying a donkey, its vehicle, and harness, together with their maintenance, to etiquette and multiple hitches. Although ideally the training for harness should begin at a very early age, an increasing number of people are finding that donkeys outgrown by their children for riding, can continue to be appreciated in harness, and this gives them and even the donkeys themselves, a great deal of interest and pleasure. A study of this book will give them the necessary knowledge to drive their pets correctly, competently, and above all safely. Miss Joy Claxton’s excellent illustrations, of which there are over forty, cover every aspect of harness, vehicles, equipment, and training, and are not only extremely clear and well-documented, but are also artistic and a pleasure to look at. The recent development of Driving for the Disabled has opened a field in which the donkey is ideally suited by reason of its equable temperament, and many donkey owners will, with the help of this book, be able to give pleasure and help to disabled persons. In addition to being an invaluable textbook for all donkey owners, many people not necessarily practically involved m driving their donkeys will also enjoy it for interest’s sake.
