Description

Dent, Anthony Austen (1972). Donkey: the Story of the Ass from East to West. Harrap. 172 Seiten. ISBN 978-0245599323

Servant, steed, and playmate, the donkey is one of the oldest and best-loved companions of man. Yet its story has been strangely neglected, while histories of the horse abound. Anthony Dent has now written this detailed and fascinating history of the journey of the donkey from its original home in Africa, where it was caught and tamed centuries before the first horse was either ridden or driven, through almost all the habitable regions of the world – Egypt, Asia, Europe, America, and Australia. In every age and every climate the donkey, and its strange relative, the mule, have had an important role to play, from carrying the kits of gold prospectors to serving as mounts for high ecclesiastics. Indeed, in many areas they are still an essential part in the way of life of millions. As R. S. Summerhays writes in his Foreword: „One gets the impression that Anthony Dent has searched every corner of the earth to tell us about all there is to be known of the donkey, and during his journey collected many intriguing and unusual drawings to embellish this outstanding work . . .. Every donkey-lover should read this book – and share my enjoyment, which has been great. Here is surely the Complete Story of the Donkey.“

Anthony Dent is the author of a number of books about horses and ponies and has contributed many articles to such journals as Riding, Light Horse, Country Life, and Horse and Hound. He has been a member of the Arab Horse Society for some fifteen years and is well known as the translator of some of Harrap’s horse books, including The Arab Horse in Europe, They Rode into Europe, and Connemara: Seaboard of the Horses. Born in North Yorkshire in 1915, he spent thirty years in publishing before becoming a full-time writer. before becoming a full-time writer.
