Detailed instructions for carving a realistic mule or donkey, including harness. My purpose in writing this book is to bring together, a short, concise bit of information, that I have been unable to obtain in any one place. In all the carving books I own or have seen, there is no information or patterns of realistic mules. So to begin with: About 1940 the world became more mechanized and the use of the mule began to diminish. Farmers and dray companies, as well as the army, turned to motor transportation. More recently mules have begun to develop into back yard pets and are used for polo, rodeo, races and a thousand other enjoyments. The kind of information I have in this book, I have gleaned from mule lovers, mule societies and from my own experience. When I was a young lad, from about 12 years, I spent my summer vacations on the farm. There I had the opportunity to learn a little about this unique animal. My father was a blacksmith and while helping him I gained a greater and somewhat unusual insight into their behavior. There is included a chapter on the origin and characteristic of the mule, followed by detailed instructions and patterns of various poses, as well as a challenge to experiment on your own and expand your individual abilities. I have not gone into elaborate detail about the different kinds of wood and their characteristics or density, nor have I tried to elaborate on the different ways to sharpen the pocket knife or other tools, feeling there are many books on the market that go into detail on these subjects. However, there is included a drawing on how to build a reasonably priced sharpening machine in this book. One I have built and use daily.
