Although mules have been bred and used for many purposes and in many parts of the world for some thousands of years, they have never received from writers the attention that they clearly deserve. Now that their numbers are greatly reduced and their breeding has ceased in many countries, it seems fitting to make, as in this book, an attempt to describe the nature and character of the mule and hinny, to record their place in history, to discuss their genetics (they surpass both their parents), and generally to express the appreciation that men in various occupations have felt for mules and the services they have given. Perhaps the day is not far off when the mule will be as rare an animal as the Giant Panda, a prospect that gives an added interest to a hybrid of undeniable fascination.
The author: Educated at Aldenham and St. John’s College, Cambridge, Theodore Savory spent forty years leading the uneventful life of a public school master, teaching science at Malvern College and latterly as senior biologist at the Haberdashers‘ Aske’s Hampstead School. As a zoologist‘, the author has specialized in the study of spiders and other arachnids; he has contributed a number of papers to scientific journals, and has written several books, including The Biology of Spiders, The Spider’s Web, Spiders, Men and Scorpions and The Arachnida. His books of a very different character include Latin and Greek for Biologists, The Language of Science and The Art of Translation.
