Mrs. Svendsen is a remarkable woman and her deep concern for these gentle intelligent creatures has made her the donkey’s most formidable champion. In June 1982 over 1300 donkeys had been taken into care at the Donkey Sanctuary in Devon. These are the true, sometimes amusing, sometimes sad, stories of some of those taken in. A Registered Charity – no needy donkey has ever been turned away. The total net proceeds or this book go towards the work of rescuing and caring for those in distress and need. It has been very difficult trying to select just twelve donkeys for this book. So many have such interesting backgrounds. I have tried to select a group to give as wide a variation as possible and, of course, to illustrate the many ways in which donkeys can find themselves in trouble. Many of the donkeys can be seen at Slade House Farm although now we are spread over five farms, they may be in one of our other groups. I do hope you enjoy the book. To the best of my knowledge the facts contained are all true although for obvious reasons names of humans have had to be changed.
