Donkeys are an integral part of the lives of Robin Stothard and her husband, and when I visited them this summer, shortly after reading this book in manuscript, I was struck by the tranquility of the Jackdaw Donkey Stud. There appeared to be none of the usual bustle, and indeed, it seemed as if they do not so much run a Stud as allow their donkeys as natural an environment as possible in this country, around which they are constant and very welcome visitors. This seemingly effortless management is misleading and the secret is to be found in this book and particularly in two comments Mrs. Stothard makes: the first, dealing with bad habits, „to gain your donkey’s respect means that you have to achieve quite a high standard of behaviour yourself“; and the second, „the important thing about dealing with animals is to be ready and to anticipate just in case you need to be resourceful“. You can hardly go wrong if you keep these two maxims in mind. If a child is a member of a Pony Club, this book will underline much that he or she already knows about animal management, but for those with no previous experience of donkeys, and for their parents, it will be of immense value. It is just what it sets out to be – a Guide for beginners. There is also much in it of great value to the hardened devotee of the donkey.
